BSC 3780 RJE Terminal Emulation

Technical Definitions.  BSC (Binary Synchronous Communications) Remote Job Entry (RJE) protocol using binary data between mainframe computer systems and IBM 2780 and 3780 Remote Job Entry terminals (now generally PCs).  An IBM protocol which is one of the two commonly used methods of encoding data for transmission between devices in Mini and Mainframe computer systems.  Data characters are gathered in a package called a frame that is marked by two (bi) start and stop synchronization bits.  It operates with EBCDIC or ASCII character sets.  Versus Asynchronous Transmission - a method of communications between computers whereby data bytes are separated from each other by preceding each with one or two start bits and following each one with a stop bit.  Bytes may be sent at irregular intervals. (Note - in synchronous transmission, a clock is used instead of start and stop bits).

RJE (Remote Job Entry) A method of submitting work to and from a computer (usually a mainframe system) in a batch 3780" (BSC) or 3770" (SNA) format.  Though sometimes superseded by the 3270 interactive (versus Batch) system, it is widely used in some installations, especially within market niches like: Electronic Data Interchange (EDI); EC (Electronic Commerce), electronic tax filing (to IRS); credit card verifications (Banking); large CAD file transfers; and other similar markets.

Typical Applications Supported using 3780 Protocol

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) CAD/CAM/CAE/CIM Bulk Data File Transfers IRS Electronic Tax Filing
Medical Health Care Claims Filing/Payment Point-of-Sale Transactions Electronic Funds Transfer and ATM Transactions
Credit Card Verifications Lock Box Transactions and Check Clearing Federal Reserve Transactions
Bulk Micro-to-Mainframe Remote Job Entry (RJE) Fast (56 - 128 Kbit/s) Data Transfers over ISDN Lines Others

Features and Special Capabilities (DOS shown - varies somewhat between Windows and UNIX Versions)

  1. 1.  Here is what any good 3780 package should provide as basic functions:

Handle all IBM 2780 and 3780 protocol standards. Plus, such things as Auto Dial (with selected modems), Auto Answer, sending and receiving both Binary (Transparent) and Text (Non-Transparent) files, support for space compression, multiple records per block, user-definable receive and transmit timeout retries, a built-in line trace facility for problem determination, the capability of specifying receive file names when sending files to compatible systems, along with the capability of sending single records from either the keyboard or from command (script-batch-job) files.  Operate either as a Master or Slave for PC to PC communications. Automatic conversion from/to EBCDIC/ASCII. User defined Tables for printer Vertical Format Unit (VFU) commands.  Support switched (dial-up), leased lines & ISDN. Hot Key capability to run either system commands or stand-alone application programs without ending the communications session.

Specified below are what better 3780 software products (like CTI's FastSync® 3780) should be able to provide in addition to the basic functions described above:

  2. Automatic command file execution can be delayed until a predetermined time to take advantage of lower long distance telephone rates late at night using the Kickoff command or Sleep program.
  3. Automatic Sign-On upon program execution, or from within a command file.
  4. Current speed setting of multi-speed modems displayed on the screen.
  5. Receive file names can be completely specified as prefix only, as well as prefix plus alpha extension.
  6. Receive command has options to either append or overwrite existing files.
  7. Files can be requested by name from remote compatible systems.
  8. Full Interactive Capabilities - Function key entry for commonly used commands. Function key assignments displayed on screen (optional on UNIX systems).
  9. Translation Tables can be easily changed using an included screen I/O based program.
  10. Remote Control capability for State-of-the-Art customer service and support.
  11. Configuration items can be changed individually with a single command.
  12. Optional ability to display file contents on screen while simultaneously receiving to disk.
  13. Menu driven HELP feature with extended help facility to provide specific information for each command.
  14. Quiet mode suppresses all screen output.
  15. While running in Quiet Mode, user has option of displaying user defined screen messages.
  16. Report file contents can be customized through command line options.
  17. Variables can be passed to Command Files through DOS .BAT files.
  18. Commands may be entered at any time.
  19. Command Buffering - new commands can be entered before prior command is finished processing. #12;
  20. Interactive command files can prompt user for input, and branch to different points in the command file based upon the user's response.
  21. Report file contains user's start-up configuration (aids the technical support department).
  22. Default Report File name can be changed by user from the command line.
  23. Telephone line disconnected automatically (DTR dropped) when program execution is ended (doesn't keep the phone off-hook).
  24. Display is in Color, and DOS users may define screen colors.
  25. Automatic naming of both punch and printer files.
  26. Punch files can be received as either print or punch files.
  27. Configuration displayed on Screen at all times unless optionally suppressed by user.
  28. Program will support fast line or page printers with the appropriate synchronous interface card.
  29. Files can be renamed and/or erased without shelling-out to the operating system.
  30. All configuration options for internal modems can be changed from either a command file, the keyboard, or command line.
  31. File name and file size displayed on Screen.
  32. 3780 Status continuously displayed on Screen in real time, rather than after the fact.
  33. Other command files can be called from within command files.
  34. Command File Name, Trace File Name, and Report File Name displayed on Screen.
  35. Type of internal modem/card displayed on Screen unless suppressed by the user.
  36. Block Sizes up to 3,000+ Characters (higher upon request).
  37. Any IRQ conflicts displayed on Screen.
  38. Use of IRQs optional (but, depends on particular DOS Systems).
  39. Real time clock displayed on the screen.
  40. Dial through non-autodial modems without having to switch the modem from talk (voice) mode into data mode.
  41. File contents can be read or changed while on line with a remote system.
  42. Global error trapping can be set up for the duration of the command (also called job or script) file.
  43. Routines to handle command errors can be specified as options with the command.

CTI's FastSync's 3780 features and capabilities include all of the above.

Software Overview of FastSync 3780

FastSync 3780 from CTI is a very fast, easy to install, easy to use, powerful, and feature rich 3780/2780 IBM Remote Job Entry (RJE) bisynchronous file transfer program for Micro-to-Mainframe, Mainframe-to-Micro, and PC-to-PC communication applications. The software is Y2K Compliant.

The FastSync 3780 code was initially developed in the 1970s and has now matured into a true third generation software product. FastSync was designed for absolutely error free, maximum high speed data transfers.  For a list of program Commands along with a quick overview, click here.  It operates not only over standard analog type Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) lines, but also over the newer, digital ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) Basic Rate Interface (BRI) lines.
