In a market research study done by Network Computing titled "Intranet Drivers and Decision Markers" and discussed in Network Computing July 15, 1997 article Extranets Give Businesses The Edge, by Patricia Schnaidt (page 109), application software deployment will change considerably between 1997 and the year 2000 for Mainframe, Client/Server and Internet/Intranet applications. The term Extranet was also discussed and the businesses surveyed defined the term "as an intranet specifically for allowing third-party access."
