Reinitializing the Hayes Optima Business Modem

This is for DOS Users - not Windows Users1

Sometimes you might have to reinitialize the Hayes modem.  Therefore we are providing this information in the right column which came from Ted Egan.

If there seems to be a communications problem, the .TRACE command can be used to see if the proper information is being received by the modem.  For example, if the trace shows the .CALL command being echoed back from the modem, this would be an indication that the modem never saw (or never reacted to) the initialization string, which turns echo off.  If this happens, the modem might need to be reinitialized.

Today I had to have one of CTI's customers reinitialize the Hayes modem by keying in "AT&F" <ENTER> within FastSync 3780, followed by "AT&W" <ENTER> to write out the changes. Once the customer did that, everything seemed to work as far as we could test.

Before I had the customer reinitialize the modem, the modem would respond with "OK" to "AT" commands.  After a good  initialization, it should respond with "0".

The customer later admitted that she had used the modem with AOL.  It is possible that AOL wrote changes into the modem, or it is possible that the modem was never reset after it was used by someone else.

To Repeat the above procedure another way...
  • From your command prompt, key in "FastSync" (without the quotes), and press <ENTER>.
  • When you see the message, "Modem Initialization Complete", key in "AT&F" and press <ENTER>.
  • When you see the response of "OK", key in "AT&W" and press <ENTER>. After you see the response "OK", the modem is reset to the factory settings.
  • While you are doing this, note whether the lights on the modem flash briefly.  If they don’t, we are talking to some other modem.  The Hayes "TR" light should remain on.
  • Exit FastSync <F10> and try again.

1.  Windows users can use Hyper Terminal to do this - Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications/HyperTerminal.
