Operating PC Card Modems Under Windows 95 Latest Version

To check which version of Windows 95 you have, right-click My Computer and select Properties.

4.00.950b OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2)

OSR2 introduced some new features, one of which was power management for PC Card Modems. Unfortunately, this causes problems for many applications, as they do not know how to "wake up" the cards.  Consequently, the modem appears dead.

To switch off this feature, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power and select the PC Card Modems tab.  Uncheck the box labelled Turn Off PC Card Modems When Not In Use.  Click Apply, take the card out and put it back in again.

The card should now be accessible to all applications.
