Site Preparation for FastSync® TCP/IP Mailbox System when using a Dial-Up Phone System (not the Internet) |
Installing a standard dial-up (switched) telephone line is usually best. Often, you cannot effectively operate through older analog based PBX or Centrex telephone systems. In these cases, have the telephone technicians bypass your in-house PBX telephone system and install a POTS line. In many areas of Canada, a Data Grade Line works best.
IMPORTANT WARNING from 3COM: Connect your modem to an Analog line only. Using a non-analog line (e.g., digital, PBX, Multi-line) will damage the modem.
Here are three (3) very important actions that you MUST do before installing the CTI Mailbox program from your CD-ROM:
| 1 | Make sure you have installed TCP/IP Networking onto your computer - we cannot do this for you and it probably was not installed as part of your initial Windows installation. You can install this protocol from your Microsoft Windows disk(s) or your Windows CD-ROM. If you don't know what we're talking about, please consult with your System Administrator. |
| 2 | Then, you must install Microsoft's Windows Dial-Up
Networking (DUN) software - same thing as RAS "Remote Access Services"
for Windows NT 3.51 and NT 4.0x and XP users. This can be installed from your existing Windows
CD-ROM. Note: Sometimes people think because they can call out of their PC into the
the Web they have Dial-Up Networking installed - NOT true. They may, for example, be
using a program such as provided by AOL which has its own dialing program. You MUST
therefore make sure you have MICROSOFT'S Dial-Up Networking installed. If you have Dial-Up Networking already installed and only want the latest recommended up-grade to Windows 95, you will find it in a sub-directory on the CTI CD-ROM - have your Systems Administrator install it for you. Also, in Dial up networking you need to create a phonebook entry for CTI-VAN with the correct phone number and settings. |
| 3 | In addition, you must have at least one modem installed and configured to work with the Dial-Up Networking software. In Windows 95, 98, NT and XP, Modems are installed through the My Computer icon on your desktop, then the Control Panel icon, then the Modems icon. If you don't have experience with doing this, have your Systems Administrator help you. |
| When the above steps are completed, then you will be ready to install the TCP/IP based Mailbox System from your CD-ROM. The CD-ROM has Microsoft's Autoboot, but it certainly is slow to boot. Just wait a minute and the self-installing program will load. After the Client Mailbox Program is installed, you will be asked for the 3.5" floppy disk from your Post Office Administrator - this is where the Server is located that you will be connecting into. |
