Since you will most likely use your Hayes OPTIMA modem for accessing the World Wide Web and other asynchronous oriented interfaces, we suggest you start by having your company's System Administrator install the modem first.  This will require that DUN (Dial Up Networking) be installed before the modem.  Then after you have configured your modem to use the FastSync 3780 bi-synchronous software (discussed below), you will be able to use the same modem connection for all of your communications needs.  See "Installing a Hayes External modem in a Windows 95/98/XP Environment" and "Tweaking the Windows 95/98/XP Environment for Hayes AutoSync" under Tech Tips.  Also, be sure to read and follow the information in Site Preparation which covers your phone lines.  Make note as to which COM port the modem is connected to.

Windows 95/98 and XP users.  If you purchased the non-GUI version of the FastSync 3780 software, you will be operating the software program under a DOS WINDOW.  Therefore, you will find it best to bring-up your DOS Prompt (Click START, Click  PROGRAMS, Click MS-DOS Prompt) and install the program from there.  Or, you can use the Windows Explorer program (Click START, CLICK PROGRAMS, Click Windows Explorer) to create a "3780" directory, then copy all the files from your FastSync 3780 Floppy Disk into the 3780 directory (or whatever directory you're installing the 3780 software in).

Special Note to users who are installing the FastSync 3780 software for use with another software application program.  If you are using another company's application software program (such as a Banking, Credit Union, a Mailbox Program such as used with the TOYOTA CAD EXCHANGE (TCX), or other such application program), it may be necessary to install FastSync into a specific sub-directory.  Know where you need to install FastSync 3780 files before you continue.

If you are up-dating your system (e.g., from DOS or Windows 3.1 to Windows 98, NT, Win2K, or XP), copy your current files and sub-directories to the new PC before installing your new disk.  In fact, so you don't overlay certain files, it might be best to call us to help you with the install.  Regardless, have a back-up of your existing files.  Play it safe.

Setting-up the Hayes Modem for the FastSync 3780 (non-GUI) Software.  From within a DOS Window, you will start with the SETCARD.EXE program.  Key in SETCARD and hit <ENTER>.  The first question it asks is whether your synchronous interface card is already installed within your computer.  Since it isn't, press any key (except the "Y" key).  From the next screen, select "Async Com Port with Hayes AutoSync" (it's the 3rd selection from the bottom).

You will then be asked which COM port your modem is connected into (COM1 or COM2) [see Note], next you will be asked to select an IRQ.  Generally you will select IRQ #4 if the modem is connected to COM1, and IRQ #3 if it is connected to COM2.  That's it for running the SETCARD program.

Note:  Because of some BIOS situations it is not always possible to run the SETCARD.EXE program successfully and it becomes necessary to restart your PC in MS-DOS mode. You can tell if this situation occurs when the program cannot find the PC's COM port(s) and takes you directly to the IRQ setting alternatives.

Next, to see if the FastSync 3780 software has been configured to operate with the Hayes modem at the COM port specified, key in FASTSYNC and hit <ENTER>.  If the program's screen comes up and says "INITIALIZING COMMUNICATIONS HARDWARE.  HARDWARE INITIALIZATION COMPLETE" you are configured OK.  If you don't get this message, there is likely a conflict somewhere in you system.  Perhaps you are not installed on the right COM Port.  This happens a lot when the PC manufacturer mixes-up the cable connections to your serial ports.  Run-run SETCARD and try the other COM Port and run FASTSYNC again.

Once the message "INITIALIZING COMMUNICATIONS HARDWARE.  HARDWARE INITIALIZATION COMPLETE" is received and stays-up on the FastSync 3780 Main Menu Screen, your software has been configured correctly.  At this point you will want to consider setting up an automated system to handle your communications by developing a COMMAND file.   Then a batch file to kick-off your COMMAND file.  See Tech Tips for other further information.   Select #4 for sample command files.
