| Most difficulties occur during the initial installation and
testing of software, synchronous I/O cards and modems. Settings such as I/O ports and IRQs
must be customized for each computer to avoid conflicts with other devices installed
within your computer. And, telephone lines that seem fine for voice communications might
not be good enough for data transmission. This installation guide provides you with a step-by-step approach to the installation of the external port option for the SyncPack 2000i internal modem board. If these steps are followed, any problems that occur can be easily identified, corrected and kept to a minimum. |

SyncPack 2000i Installation Guide
In most cases, the internal SyncPack 2000i 14,400 bps modem board acts as a back-up modem in case either faster type modems such as the Motorola V3260 or ISDN Terminal Adapters are connected to the SyncPack with the optional high-speed external port. We recommend that you install and test your SyncPack 2000i modem first (that is, before attaching the high-speed external port), since this configuration is simpler and any installation problems are easier to diagnose and to correct. Once the SyncPack 2000 internal modem is working properly, you can set up the external Motorola V3260 modem (or similar type approved modem) knowing that the address for the internal board is correct and that your phone lines are suitable for data communications.
Install your Software First
The SyncPack 2000i package includes software (FastSync® and other programs), along with synchronous hardware (the SyncPack 2000i). Now you should install the FastSync software first before installing the internal modem. Our normal installation process is well suited for this purpose. At the end of the software installation, a screen appears asking you to identify your internal card/board type. After you choose the SyncPack 2000, you select a base address and IRQ from a list of base addresses and IRQs available on your computer. The program ends with a picture of the switches on your SyncPack 2000i and the correct settings for the base address and IRQ you have chosen. Make note of the switch settings and set the switches on the back of your SyncPack 2000i. It is also a good idea to print or to write these settings down somewhere in your User Manual for future reference.
Install your SyncPack 2000i Hardware into your PC
Make sure your PC is turned off and install your SyncPack into an open 16-bit full length lot. Then connect the telephone line to either of the phone jacks in the back of the SyncPack 2000i and test your installation. Once you communicate successfully through the SyncPack 2000i, you are ready to install the options and external port connections to get your external modem operational.

The back of a typical PC is shown at the left. It contains the SyncPack 2000i in the 2nd slot. An RJ-11 telephone cord is connected from the top port on the SyncPack into your telephone wall jack. Your telephone cord should not be connected into any other device. Also, your telephone line should be connected to a direct outside line. That is, it should NOT run through your company's PBX system. You will be using a protocol (3780) which is a block, not bit streamed, protocol and needs plenty of bandwidth depending upon the block size. |
Next you need to install the external port connector to the SyncPack 2000i. You must remove the cover from your computer in order to see the SyncPack 2000i modem board.

You should attach the external RS-232 ribbon cable connector to JP6 on the SyncPack 2000i which is located at the top left of the card as shown in the figure to the left. If you can, try to locate JP6 without taking the card out of your computer. The ribbon connector has a red stripe on one side of it. Orient the red stripe in the manner shown in the picture at the left. The ribbon connector should be installed with the red stripe away from the back of the SyncPack 2000i. In other words, as you are facing JP6, the red stripe on the connector should be on your left. Note: the two pin sockets on the red stripe side of the ribbon connector do not have matching pins on the SyncPack 2000i. |
After you have re-configured the telephone cords, test the communications software again. If it works correctly, continue. If it does not, check the connections. If everything seems fine and the modem still does not work, call CTI Communications Technical Support Department.
Once the external port connector is installed onto the SyncPack 2000i modem board, the other end of the connector should be secured to an unused expansion slot opening in the back of your computer.
After the internal SyncPack 2000i modem is working, re-configure the telephone cords as shown in the following layout. The use of this configuration allows you to switch modems without having to change any of the telephone cords.

Connecting your internal SyncPack to an External Modem The telephone cord that currently connects from the SyncPack 2000i to the wall jack should be re-installed so that it connects from the SyncPack 2000i top telephone jack location to the telephone jack marked "Phone" on the back of the external Motorola V3260 modem (or other approved external modem). A second telephone cord should be connected the external modem jack location (dial line) to the outside telephone wall jack. The other (6 to 10 foot) standard synchronous RS-232 cable supplied with your external modem can then be attached to the end of the ribbon connector port and to the modem itself. |
Installing Modem Up-Loader Software
The next step is to install the modem uploader software from the diskette marked SyncPack 2000i. The modem uploader software allows you to customize the features on your SyncPack by uploading software modules to the modem.
Before these modules can be selected or uploaded, the modem uploader software must be installed and configured.
The installation and configuration of the software will be discussed shortly. First, some general guidelines that will help you navigate through the program:
To EXIT the setup program:
Place the mouse cursor over the "ALT X Exit" box in the lower left hand corner. If your computer does not have a mouse, hold down the ALT key while typing X (you may have to CANCEL your current window first).
To SELECT A BUTTON in a dialog box:
If you have a mouse on your computer, simply place the mouse cursor over the button on the screen and click the left mouse button.
If you do not have a mouse on your computer, press the TAB key until the correct button is highlighted, OR hold down the ALT key while typing the highlighted letter within the button name.
To MOVE TO A FIELD in a dialog box:
Place the mouse cursor in the field and click the left mouse button.
If you do not have a mouse on your system, press the TAB key to move forward, OR hold down the SHIFT key and press the TAB key to move backward, OR hold down the ALT key while typing the highlighted letter in the field name.
To MOVE BETWEEN ITEMS within a field:
Place the mouse in the field and click the left mouse button. If you do not have a mouse on your computer, use the cursor control keys (arrows, PgUp, PgDn, Home, et cetera.)
To MARK or UNMARK a checkbox:
Place the mouse cursor in the checkbox and click the left mouse button. If you do not have a mouse, make sure that the cursor is in the checkbox and press the spacebar.
To EDIT TEXT in a text field:
Type in new text to replace the highlighted text, OR Use HOME, END or arrow keys to move to the desired location, THEN type new text to insert, or use the DEL key or the BackSpace key to delete old text.
Place the modem uploader SyncPack 2000 diskette into one of your floppy drives. These examples assume that your are using drive A. If you are using drive B, substitute "B:" for "A:" in the example. Key in:
A:SPSETUP
The SP-Setup software begins by asking you to confirm the source (floppy) drive and the target (destination) drive and directory. We recommend that you install the uploader software into the default directory, \SYNCPACK however, you can change this information. When both items are correct, click on "OK" if you have a mouse or press the <ENTER> key.
Next, you are asked to enter the Com Port (I/O Port) address and IRQ configured on the SyncPack 2000i. You can enter the Com Port and IRQ directly, or you can provide the software with the switch settings on the back of the card. After you have provided the information, the software checks to make sure that it can access the card at the specified address and IRQ. If there is a problem, you are asked to enter the address and IRQ again. If not, you can begin the next phase of the installation.
You are asked to specify which modules you want to upload. The discussion of all the available options is beyond the scope of this document. For now, you will want to select the ULM V32EXP0.nn.
The "nn" will be replaced with a revision level on your screen. Selected modules are marked with an "X." By default, all modules present on your diskette are marked for upload, so you will probably have to click on any unwanted modules to remove the "X."
When you have finished identifying the modules you want uploaded, click on "OK" or press <ENTER> to finish this screen.
Next, you are prompted for the configuration file name. The configuration file name defaults to "SPSETUP.CFG." Simply click on "OK" or press <ENTER> to use that file name. After you have confirmed the upload file name, you are asked if you want to have the upload option added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Respond with "Y" for yes to this question.
Finally, you are asked if you want to upload the module now. Respond "Yes" to this question. The module should be uploaded to the modem. If there are any error messages that appear on the screen, note them and call CTI Technical Support.
Now, change to the directory where you installed your FastSync software. Run a software program named, SETRS232. The program asks you to select the external modem you are using from a list of supported modems. Select the external modem from the list by using the up and down arrow keys to highlight the correct modem and pressing <ENTER>.
Turn on the external modem and run the FastSync program by typing "fastsync" at the DOS prompt of the directory where you installed the FastSync software. The box labeled "Synchronous Interface" at the top of the FastSync screen will initially indicate that you are using a CTI SyncPack 2000i modem. After FastSync has finished its initialization, the entry in the box should read "RS 232." Check the modem. The TR (or DTR) light on the modem should be lit. Press F10 and the light should go off.
If there are any error messages during testing, note the error message and call CTI Technical Support. If the TR light on the modem does not light, the connector is probably incorrectly installed onto the CTI SyncPack. Check to make sure that it is installed according to the drawing earlier in this document.
If the special module for the external connector is not uploaded to the modem, the CTI SyncPack 2000i will not connect to the external modem. If FastSync does not find the special command to initialize the external port, the CTI SyncPack 2000i will not connect with the external modem. In either event, the internal modem will take over automatically and the TR light on the modem will not glow.
The external modem can be bypassed by commenting out the line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file that invokes the uploader. The line normally appears like this:
\SYNCPACK\SPUPLOAD SPUPLOAD.CFG
Any line in a ".BAT" file can be commented out by putting the word "REM" as the first word of the line.
Another way to disable the external connector is to run the program, CMDLINE, which is used to maintain a default DOS command line used by FastSync.
CMDLINE is a special program that sets up default DOS command line arguments for use by FastSync. Run the program by keying in CMDLINE <ENTER> at a DOS prompt. On the left side of the screen, available command line options are listed. On the right side of the screen, current command line options are listed.
Options are removed by pressing the right arrow key to activate the current command line box. Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight the option you want to remove. In this case you want to remove the option ".MODEM (RS232 nn)" where "nn" represents a number that identifies your particular external modem type to FastSync. Remove the highlighted entry by pressing <ENTER>.
